Maddy Richardson is a designer/maker based in mid Wales, whose work is sold under the name Mads & Co.
Her original beadwoven jewellery is sewn by hand using traditional stitches originally developed by Native Americans, South Africans and Eastern Europeans. Each stitch has its own character which is reflected in the jewellery. A stiff bangle needs the structure of tubular peyote stitch, while a softly draping cuff exploits the feel of flat herringbone stitch.
Each item includes hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny Japanese glass seed beads. Available in a huge variety of colours and finishes, their beauty is often enhanced by Swarovski crystals, Czech fire-polished crystals and semi-precious gemstones. Speciality beading thread and meticulous craftsmanship ensure the longevity of each piece.
Maddy's current work reflects her interest in exploring both limited and monochromatic palettes, and using them to create texture and pattern.
